WILLIAM NORTHCUTT (Source: Family Data Collection – Births.) was born Abt. 1745 in Abbeville County, South Carolina, and died Abt. 1793 in Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina. He married SARAH WILLIAMS. It is believed that his father was Hosea Northcutt.
Following are extracts from NORTHCUTT by Dixon Lyle Northcutt:
“Our earliest known Northcott ancestor in America was Hosea who was a farmer and fisherman born in Abbeville County, South Carolina. he was still living in that colony when his son, William, was born in 1745.
William Northcott moved to North Carolina where he married Sarah Williams and lived in Greenville, Pitt County. William served as a Reverend soldier in the Revolution and died in 1793. William’s oldest son, Benjamin, became a minister also. It is reported that Benjamin and his brothers, William (second son of William), and Hosea (third son) followed Daniel Boone across the mountains to settle new lands in the west. Neither had a land grant because the war service of their father was brief. Benjamin went to Kentucky while William and Hosea moved to the East Fork of Stones River, Rutherford County, “Trimbles” district. [Tennessee.] John Northcott, by some accounts a younger brother but perhaps a cousin, also settled on the East Fork (but about five miles to the west), might have been traveling with them.
The settlers probably moved over the early roads from Cumberland Gap to Nashville prior to 1800. There they remained with others until General Jackson and his militia defeated the Cherokees at Nickojack in 1794 and treaties were signed to permit settlement to large territories in Middle Tennessee. With very rapid settlement, Rutherford County was formed in 1803 and included the western part of Cannon County until it was formed in 1836.”
