James McCartney’s occupation in 1900 was listed as teamster. No, they didn’t drive trucks until several years later. A teamster in 1900 drove a team of horses with a wagon of goods, often for long distances. The teamster union still uses horses in its logo, and there is a very good description of the history of early teamsters at http://www.teamster.org/about/history.htm, part of which follows below.

“From colonial times to the turn of the last century, the men who drove horse-drawn wagons formed the backbone of North America’s wealth and prosperity. Despite their essential role as guardians of trade—the lifeblood of the economy—they remained unorganized and exploited.

In a teamster’s life, work was scarce and jobs insecure. Poverty was commonplace. In 1900, the typical teamster worked 12-18 hours a day, seven days a week for an average wage of $2.00 per day. A teamster was expected not only to haul his load, but to assume liability for bad accounts and for lost or damaged merchandise. The work left teamsters assuming all of the risks with little chance for reward.”

Jack McCartney

1927-2004

Jack McCartney, longtime Snyder resident, died Saturday, Feb. 28, at his home after a lengthy illness.

Service for Mr. McCartney, 76, was held at 1 p.m. today in the Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home with Monsignor Curtis T. Halfmann officiating. Burial was to follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens.

He was born on May 11, 1927 in Rochelle, and married Winifred Jean Clennan on July 24, 1950 in Perryman. She died Feb. 11, 1987. Mr. McCartney moved to Snyder in 1954 and worked as a welder for Holder Construction Co. for many years before starting his own welding service. He retired in 1986. Mr. McCartney attended Rochelle high school until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1944. He was one of the youngest petty officers to serve in the Navy.

Survivors include two sons, the Rev. James McCartney of Plainview and Charles McCartney and his wife Cindy of Lubbock; three sisters, Velma Oliver, Betty Phelps and Mildred Lindhorn; four brothers and sisters-in-law, L.V. and Nona McCartney, Willie Ray and Barbara McCartney, Junior and Ann McCartney and Bobby and Evelyn McCartney; and a granddaughter, Jaqueline Salter of Lubbock
