John T. C. Attaway

John T. C. Attaway was born September 11, 1832. He was the son of Sisly Attaway. He died April 25, 1885 in Marshall County, Alabama. He married Belinda Ann Beck November 5, 1853 in Talbot County, Ga. She was the daughter of John Beck and Nancy Mier. She died April 23, 1866. He married Mrs Georgia Ann Bryant on February 2, 1867 in Taylor County, Georgia. She died about 1873 in Georgia. He married Eliza C. Jones on December 6, 1874. She died February 13, 1885 in Marshall County, Alabama.

John T. C. Attaway was enumerated in the 1840 census in his mother, Sisly Attaway’s household. He was counted again in 1850 at the age of 15, along with his brother William, age 14, and his mother, age 45. The 1850 census listed his occupation simply as “laborer.”

The 1860 census counts him, his wife Belinda Ann. a daughter Nancy E. (age 7) and a son John W. (age 5). Belinda Ann Beck Attaway died April 23, 1866, age 34 years and 11 days, according to the Craig family bible.

John T. C. Attaway was married for the second time on February 03, 1867, to Mrs. Georgia Ann Bryant. It is unknown at this time what her maiden name was or the name of her first husband. She had two children from that first marriage, Martha J. Bryant and Frances Bryant, that became a part of the Attaway household, and they were enumerated there in the 1870 census. The two girls were 12 and 11 years old, respectively. Also on that census were Nancy E. Attaway, age 15 and John Attaway, age 13. His occupation was listed as “works at steam mill.” John T. C. Attaway’s occupation was listed as “Lawyer at steam mill.” This is the first indication of a connection in adulthood between John T. C. Attaway and his brother, William R. Attaway. Since William was a millwright, it is likely that they both worked at the steam mill. It is believed that John W. Attaway left home within a year of this census. Georgia Ann Bryant Attaway died about 1873.

John T. C. Attaway was married again to Eliza C. Jones On December 6, 1874. She was born about 1847. Together, they had 4 more children. John and Eliza died just two months apart in 1885. It is reported that an accident with a cart was responsible for their deaths. If true, John obviously was not killed immediately. John had a total of 9 children. After the death of John and Eliza, the remaining children went to live with their uncle Joseph – Eliza’s brother. Russell and Jeffie Attaway were still enumerated there in the 1900 Etowah County, Alabama census. Leander Sisly Attaway was married to S.C. Bolding a month after her father’s death. Eula Bella Attaway was married a year and a half after her father’s death.

A descendant of Russell Jones (Eliza’a father) writes: “My Jones/Attaway line involves Jon Attaway who married Eliza Jones, daughter of Russell Jones. Sometime before Russell’s death in 1892, Jon and Eliza died in a horse and buggy wreck. They left two children Jeff (a girl) and Russell who were raised by Joseph L. Jones (Eliza’s brother) after the death of Russell Jones. “Elizabeth’s brother petitioned the Etowah Co, Al courts to sell jointly owned land of the heirs of Russell Jones in 1892. Among the heirs were listed the Attaway children.”
